Please note that, given we are in early stages of development, answers given here are subject to change.

Q: Has a name for this update been chosen?
A: No, we have not picked an official name for this update yet. Internally, we refer to this version as “Area-47: Next Generation” or “NG” for short. We encourage the community to do the same until there is an announced name.

Q: What will happen to the current Area-47 version/build while we work on this project?
A: We have been working on NG for the past few months, so you have already seen what kinds of updates the current version will get while we develop this update. We’re going to try to make sure that there are still some updates for the game while we devote the majority of our attention to NG.

Q: What are your plans for the Gun System?
A: We have been through enough iterations of our gun systems to know that the current foundation is a good one. We will continue to improve what we have right now, especially on the player-facing side. There’s a lot of room to make progress and improvements.

We intend to fully focus on the Over-the-Shoulder mode for NG, meaning we will retire RCL. We will talk in-depth about this decision and the gun system updates in a future devlog.

Q: What are the plans for SCPs?
A: We have selected a new list of SCPs for NG. Some you’ve met before, others that you have not. Many are inspired by previous writings on the wiki, but some are of our own creation. We intend to make these SCPs robust and testable. We will talk in-depth about our SCPs in a future devlog.

Q: Are there changes planned to the Actor System?
A: Yes. We acknowledge that the current actor system needs significant improvements. We’re rethinking and rebuilding the system from the ground up, and incorporating many of our new SCPs.

Q: Will there be major moderation changes coming alongside this update?
A: Yes. We want to focus on features in the game being as self-moderating as possible, reducing the amount of intervention required by moderators. In addition, we will review and change many moderation policies for NG. Some of these policies will already be released and applied within the next few days.

Q: What will happen to any gamepasses that I have purchased so far?
A: At this time, we do not have plans to cancel or void any existing gamepasses. However, with the scale of the changes being made in NG, it is possible that roles will change significantly from what they are now. We will do our best to ensure that any paid gamepasses will have roughly equivalent value in NG. Making sure we have a sustainable monetization model is a must to keep Area-47 around for a long time.

Q: What will happen to my current data, like XP?
A: “Veteran” players will receive exclusive badges and customizations to show off their progress in the previous version of the game. However, the new progression system is not compatible with how we did XP-based progression previously. We will talk in-depth about the new progression system in a future devlog. While this does mean that some amount of data will be reset, previous players with significant progress will likely have a head-start on new players.

Q: Will there be new departments?
A: We are planning on making significant changes to some departments, including the incorporation of new subdivisions.

Q: What can you share about the map right now?
A: It is too early to go into detail about our plans for the map. What we can share is that we plan for the map to be roughly 50% bigger than the current map.

Q: What are you doing to address the current lag/ping issues?
A: With NG, we are reprogramming the entirety of the game. We are making sure to put greater emphasis on being efficient in order to achieve a game with less lag and network problems.

Q: Will there be a new soundtrack?
A: Yes.
